A 1920 Expressionist interior scene by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, featuring bold, non-naturalistic colours and simplified forms to convey a quiet, psychological mood.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted Interieur in 1920, a period during which his work shifted from the jagged, urban intensity of his earlier Berlin years toward a more settled, though still psychologically charged, aesthetic. This composition captures a domestic scene, yet the application of colour and the spatial arrangement suggest a subjective experience rather than a literal transcription of a room.
The palette is dominated by non-naturalistic choices: lime green walls, a bright orange wardrobe, and a deep red floor covering. These hues create a sense of tension within the domestic space. The figures, rendered with simplified forms and angular lines, appear detached from their surroundings. One woman reclines on a sofa, while another stands near a doorway, their poses conveying a quiet, perhaps melancholic, stillness. The inclusion of a tea service in the foreground and framed pictures on the wall provides a sense of everyday life, yet the distorted perspective and the flattened depth of the room prevent the viewer from feeling entirely at ease.
Kirchner, a founding member of the Die Brücke group, often used his art to explore the emotional states of his subjects. In this work, the interior functions as a stage for human interaction, or the lack thereof. The brushwork is direct and visible, maintaining the raw quality characteristic of his approach to painting. By rejecting traditional modelling and naturalistic light, Kirchner prioritises the expression of mood over the accurate depiction of physical space. The result is an image that feels both intimate and alien, inviting the viewer to consider the internal lives of the figures rather than the comfort of their environment. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to transform mundane settings into scenes of psychological weight through the deliberate use of colour and form.
