A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a Western couple in a stylised, traditional Japanese artistic manner.
This woodblock print, titled Illustration of English People (Igirisujin no zu), is a characteristic example of Yokohama-e, a genre of Japanese art that emerged during the late Edo period. Following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859, Japanese artists produced these prints to satisfy public curiosity regarding the appearance, customs, and attire of Westerners. Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, captures a couple in a domestic setting, reflecting the fascination with foreign visitors.
The composition features a man and a woman, both depicted with the stylised features typical of the period's interpretation of Western subjects. The man, sporting a beard and a dark jacket, leans towards the woman, who wears a red bodice and a patterned skirt. A thin pipe connects them, a detail that often appeared in these prints to signify foreign habits. The background is minimal, featuring a draped curtain that provides a sense of interior space without complex perspective. The colour palette relies on muted tones, with the red of the woman's garment providing a clear visual anchor against the darker hues of the clothing and the background.
Prints of this nature were mass-produced and sold as souvenirs or educational curiosities. They offer a glimpse into how Japanese society processed the sudden influx of international influence during the Bakumatsu period. While the anatomical proportions and facial features are filtered through the conventions of traditional Japanese printmaking, the work remains a historical record of cross-cultural encounter. The print includes the artist's signature and the title in a cartouche, typical of the format used for such series. This piece provides an objective view of the period's aesthetic response to the arrival of foreign nationals in Japan.
