A detailed Meiji-era woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kuniteru depicting the introduction of steam locomotives to the Takanawa district of Tokyo.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniteru captures a moment of rapid technological change during the early Meiji period. The work depicts the arrival of steam-powered rail transport in Japan, specifically the line running through Takanawa in Tokyo. The composition is a triptych, a common format for ukiyo-e artists to present expansive scenes of modern infrastructure and public activity.
In the foreground, a steam locomotive pulls a series of carriages, rendered with the distinct colour palette and graphic sensibility of the era. The train is juxtaposed against traditional elements of the Tokyo environment, including stone embankments, pine trees, and horse-drawn carriages on the upper level. The artist documents the coexistence of traditional transport methods and the new industrial machinery that would soon transform the nation. The figures in the scene are dressed in a mix of traditional kimono and Western-influenced attire, reflecting the social shifts occurring in Japan during the 1870s.
Kuniteru employs a clear, descriptive line to delineate the mechanical details of the train and the surrounding topography. The print functions as a visual record of the modernisation efforts undertaken by the Japanese government. The sky is marked by a characteristic horizontal band of colour, a stylistic convention often seen in prints of this period to suggest the atmosphere. This work provides a view into the fascination with Western technology that defined the Meiji era, documenting the physical integration of the railway into the existing urban fabric of Tokyo.
