A seventeenth-century Mughal manuscript leaf featuring Nasta'liq calligraphy, gold illumination, and delicate marginal illustrations by the artist Mushfiq.
This manuscript leaf originates from a copy of the Panj Ganj (Five Treasures) by the Persian poet Abd al-Rahman Jami. Attributed to the artist Mushfiq, who was active in the early seventeenth century, the work reflects the refined aesthetic traditions of the Mughal court. The page features a central panel of Nasta'liq script, a calligraphic style favoured for its fluid, elegant proportions. The text is arranged in two columns, separated by gold-flecked margins that provide a sense of structure to the composition.
The illumination includes a decorative headpiece, or sarlowh, rendered in blue, gold, and white pigments. This section displays geometric and floral motifs typical of the period. Small, triangular vignettes are integrated into the side margins, depicting a bird and a crane within natural settings. These elements demonstrate the precision required in Mughal book arts, where the interplay between text and image is carefully balanced. The surrounding border is decorated with a repeating floral pattern, providing a frame for the central poetic content.
As a specimen of seventeenth-century Indian book production, this leaf demonstrates the synthesis of Persian literary heritage with local artistic techniques. The use of gold leaf and mineral pigments creates a surface that catches the light, a common feature in high-status manuscripts intended for royal or aristocratic libraries. The preservation of such pages allows for an examination of the technical standards maintained by royal workshops, where calligraphers and painters collaborated to produce volumes of exceptional quality. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the metallic sheen of the gold, offering a view into the decorative arts of the Mughal era.
