A traditional ink wash painting by Ono no Ozū, depicting the Zen figure Hotei resting with a child, rendered in fluid, calligraphic lines.
This hanging scroll depicts Hotei, the Zen Buddhist monk often associated with contentment and abundance, resting against his characteristic large cloth sack. Beside him, a small child reaches out, creating a scene of quiet interaction. The work is attributed to Ono no Ozū, a figure active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Japan. She is recognised for her contributions to the development of the kana script and her skill in ink painting, often associated with the courtly circles of the time.
The composition follows the traditions of ink wash painting, where the economy of line is prioritised. The artist uses fluid, calligraphic strokes to define the contours of Hotei's robes and the rounded form of his sack. The figure of the child is rendered with similar simplicity, balancing the larger mass of the monk. Above the figures, a passage of calligraphy occupies the upper portion of the paper, integrating text and image in a manner common to Japanese hanging scrolls. The ink tones vary from deep black to diluted grey, providing a sense of volume and texture despite the minimal use of colour.
Ono no Ozū was a woman of notable cultural standing, and her work reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the Momoyama and early Edo periods. This piece demonstrates the intersection of religious iconography and personal expression found in Zenga painting. The focus remains on the interaction between the figures, captured with a sense of spontaneity and ease. The aged paper provides a neutral background, allowing the ink work to remain the primary focus of the viewer. This print captures the subtle nuances of the original ink application, preserving the character of the brushwork and the balance of the composition as intended by the artist.
