Nicholas Roerich produced thousands of paintings during his life, with the Himalayan mountain range serving as his primary subject during his later years. This work captures the atmospheric conditions of the high-altitude terrain, focusing on the interplay between light and moisture. The composition is dominated by a central, triangular peak, rendered in varying shades of blue and violet. The sky above is treated with vertical, streaking brushwork that suggests the descent of heavy rain, obscuring the distant ridges.
Roerich utilised tempera for this piece, a medium that allowed him to achieve the matte, luminous quality characteristic of his mountain series. The application of paint is direct, with minimal blending, which creates a sense of immediacy and raw geological presence. The foreground is anchored by a dark, almost silhouette-like mass, providing a stark contrast to the lighter, ethereal tones of the peaks and the precipitation.
Unlike traditional topographical studies, Roerich approached these mountains as subjects of spiritual and philosophical contemplation. He avoided excessive detail, preferring to focus on the essential forms and the shifting moods of the weather. Artist Biography
Nicholas Roerich
He was born in St Petersburg in 1874 and studied law and art simultaneously before choosing art. After the Revolution, he left Russia and eventually settled in the Kullu Valley of India, where he established a research institute. His paintings of Central Asian mountains, produced in enormous quantities, glow with a flat, saturated colour that reflects his interest in theosophy and Eastern spiritual traditions.
The Roerich Pact, his treaty for protecting cultural sites during wartime, was the precursor to the 1954 Hague Convention. He died in Naggar, Himachal Pradesh, in 1947, at seventy-three.
