A traditional 18th-century Korean painting by Jeong Hong-Rae, featuring a hawk perched on a rock above stylised waves beneath a red sun.
This work by the 18th-century Korean artist Jeong Hong-Rae depicts a hawk perched upon a craggy rock, set against a backdrop of stylised waves and a rising sun. The composition follows the traditional bird-and-flower genre, which held a specific place in the visual culture of the Joseon Dynasty. The hawk, rendered with careful attention to its plumage and alert posture, occupies the centre of the frame. Its gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet observation.
The background features a sun represented as a solid red disc, a common motif in East Asian art that signifies authority and the passage of time. Below, the water is depicted with repetitive, rhythmic lines that create a sense of motion, contrasting with the stillness of the bird. The rock itself is painted with layered tones, providing a solid base for the hawk. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earth tones, muted blues, and the singular, striking red of the sun to draw the eye.
Jeong Hong-Rae was known for his technical skill in capturing the anatomy of birds of prey. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where natural subjects were often imbued with symbolic meaning. The use of silk as a medium allows for subtle gradations of ink and colour, which have softened over time to produce the current appearance. The work is a fine example of the formalised, yet expressive, approach to nature found in Korean courtly and scholarly art of the 1700s. It provides a clear view into the artistic conventions of the era, where the balance between the subject and its environment was carefully managed to create a harmonious visual experience.
