A traditional Joseon Dynasty ink painting on silk depicting mynah birds perched on a pine branch, symbolising longevity and resilience.
This work by the Joseon Dynasty painter Yi Gi depicts a pair of mynah birds perched upon the gnarled branches of a pine tree. The composition follows the traditional bird-and-flower genre, a subject that held significant symbolic weight in East Asian art. The pine tree, known for its ability to remain green throughout the winter, represents longevity and steadfast character. The mynahs are rendered with precise ink washes, capturing the texture of their plumage and their alert postures against the muted background.
The artist employs a restrained palette, typical of the period, where the focus remains on the calligraphic quality of the brushwork and the balance of negative space. The pine needles are executed with fine, controlled strokes, creating a sense of density without overwhelming the visual field. The interaction between the birds and the organic form of the tree branch provides a sense of movement, suggesting a fleeting moment observed in nature. The silk support has aged to a warm, earthy tone, which softens the contrast between the dark ink of the birds and the lighter washes of the foliage.
Yi Gi was a member of the royal family during the mid-Joseon period, and his work reflects the scholarly aesthetic of the time. This piece demonstrates the technical control required to manage ink on silk, where corrections are difficult to make. The vertical orientation of the hanging scroll format dictates the flow of the composition, drawing the eye from the upper branches down to the lower section where the birds are positioned. The work is a study in harmony, balancing the rigid, enduring nature of the pine with the active, living presence of the birds.
