This work depicts the legendary Zen figures Hanshan and Shide, known in Japan as Kanzan and Jittoku. Itō Jakuchū, a master of the mid-Edo period, employs a minimalist approach here, favouring economy of line over decorative detail. The two figures are rendered with swift, confident brushwork, their forms merging into a singular, unified silhouette that suggests their close spiritual bond. Hanshan, often associated with a scroll, and Shide, typically linked to a broom, are presented as eccentric, laughing hermits, embodying the unconventional nature of Zen enlightenment.

The composition is vertical, typical of the hanging scroll format. Jakuchū leaves significant negative space, a technique that directs the viewer's attention to the expressive gestures and the subtle ink washes defining the robes. The calligraphic quality of the brushstrokes reflects the artist's training and his ability to capture character through minimal visual information. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks in the hair and garments to lighter, diluted greys that suggest volume and texture without the need for rigid outlines.

Jakuchū was active in Kyoto and is recognised for his diverse output, ranging from highly detailed bird-and-flower paintings to these more spontaneous, ink-wash works. This piece demonstrates his capacity for abstraction and his engagement with the Chan (Zen) tradition of depicting these two figures as symbols of wisdom found outside societal norms.
