A refined hanging scroll painting of the Gyoran Kannon by the Edo-period master Miyagawa Chōshun, featuring delicate ink and colour work on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts the Gyoran Kannon, or the Fish-Basket Kannon, a manifestation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Miyagawa Chōshun, a painter active during the mid-Edo period, avoids the mass-produced woodblock print format in favour of hand-painted silk. This allows for a greater degree of fluidity in the brushwork, particularly in the rendering of the figure's robes and the delicate facial features.
The Kannon stands in a three-quarter profile, holding a basket containing a fish, which is the defining attribute of this specific iconographic form. The figure is draped in a white kimono adorned with floral patterns, accented by red sashes that provide a visual counterpoint to the muted, aged tone of the silk background. Behind the figure, stalks of bamboo are painted with calligraphic precision, suggesting a quiet, secluded setting. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the bamboo stalks echoing the standing posture of the Kannon.
Chōshun was known for his focus on the beauty of the human form, often depicting women in contemporary dress. In this work, he applies that aesthetic sensibility to a religious subject. The calligraphy integrated into the upper portion of the scroll adds a layer of textual depth, typical of the period's appreciation for the synthesis of visual art and literature. The work reflects the technical skill of the Miyagawa school, which prioritised the painterly quality of the line over the graphic boldness seen in later Ukiyo-e prints. The aged silk provides a warm, neutral ground that unifies the composition, allowing the subtle colours of the robes to remain the primary focus for the viewer.
