Beskrivning
A monochromatic charcoal study by Nicholas Roerich, depicting a desolate, rocky shoreline that evokes a sense of ancient history and quietude.
Nicholas Roerich, a polymath whose interests spanned archaeology, philosophy, and the visual arts, frequently returned to themes of ancient history and the natural world. This work, Giant's Tomb, captures a desolate, rocky shoreline that suggests a prehistoric burial site. The composition relies on a stark, monochromatic palette to convey a sense of stillness and antiquity.
In the foreground, large, rounded boulders sit upon a dark, textured surface, their forms rendered with soft, smudged charcoal marks. These stones appear weathered by time, echoing the geological history of the region. The middle ground transitions into a smooth, reflective expanse of water, which separates the rocky foreground from the distant, hazy horizon. The sky is rendered with subtle gradations of tone, suggesting an overcast day or the dim light of twilight.
Roerich often sought to evoke the spirit of a place through simplified forms and atmospheric effects. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he focuses the viewer on the weight and presence of the stones. The work avoids the literal depiction of a tomb, instead using the rugged terrain to imply the presence of ancient human activity. The lack of sharp edges or rigid lines contributes to a dreamlike quality, characteristic of his broader body of work during this period. This print captures the tactile quality of the original charcoal medium, preserving the soft transitions between light and shadow that define the artist's approach to form. It is a study in quietude, inviting contemplation of the relationship between human history and the enduring nature of the physical world.

Artist Biography
Nicholas Roerich
He was born in St Petersburg in 1874 and studied law and art simultaneously before choosing art. After the Revolution, he left Russia and eventually settled in the Kullu Valley of India, where he established a research institute. His paintings of Central Asian mountains, produced in enormous quantities, glow with a flat, saturated colour that reflects his interest in theosophy and Eastern spiritual traditions.
The Roerich Pact, his treaty for protecting cultural sites during wartime, was the precursor to the 1954 Hague Convention. He died in Naggar, Himachal Pradesh, in 1947, at seventy-three.
