A detailed fine art print of a medieval Persian ceramic fragment featuring a hand-incised figure in the sgraffito style.
This ceramic fragment originates from the Seljuk period in Persia, a time when pottery production reached a high level of technical and aesthetic development. The piece displays the sgraffito technique, where a design is incised through a layer of slip to reveal the contrasting clay body beneath. The surface is then covered with a transparent glaze, which has developed a fine network of crazing over the centuries.
The central figure is rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines. The subject appears to be a seated individual, possibly a courtly figure or a musician, surrounded by stylised foliate motifs. The artist utilised the limited space of the bowl interior to create a balanced composition, where the figure occupies the centre and the decorative elements frame the curvature of the vessel. The spotted pattern on the figure's garment suggests a textile design common in the period, providing texture to the otherwise flat application of the slip.
Such fragments provide insight into the domestic and decorative arts of the medieval Islamic world. While the original vessel is lost, the remaining shard preserves the skill of the potter in both form and decoration. The muted, earthy tones of the clay and the dark brown slip create a subtle visual effect, typical of the utilitarian yet refined wares produced in workshops across the region. This print captures the texture of the aged ceramic, including the subtle variations in the glaze and the wear along the broken edges. It is a study in historical material culture, offering a glimpse into the artistic traditions that defined the daily life and aesthetic preferences of the Seljuk era.
