A 17th-century Persian fritware bottle featuring deer motifs in underglaze blue, reflecting the artistic traditions of the Safavid period.
This ceramic bottle originates from 17th-century Persia, a period when Safavid potters produced fine fritware vessels. The object displays a white body decorated with cobalt blue pigments, a technique influenced by the trade and appreciation of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. The surface features a recurring motif of deer moving through a stylised natural setting, surrounded by floral elements and foliage. The composition is balanced, with the deer figures providing a sense of movement against the static, decorative background.
The neck of the bottle is adorned with a vertical arrangement of leaf-like forms, leading up to a metal mount at the rim. This mount, featuring enamel work, suggests the vessel was held in high regard and perhaps repurposed or protected by its owner. The blue-and-white colour scheme is characteristic of the period, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the Safavid court and the broader Persian market. The painting style is fluid, with the artist using varying brush pressure to define the forms of the animals and the surrounding vegetation.
This piece demonstrates the technical skill of Persian ceramicists who adapted foreign influences to suit local tastes. The combination of the bulbous body and the slender neck creates a silhouette that is both functional and decorative. The underglaze painting remains clear, showing the precision required to execute such designs on a curved surface. As a fine art print, this image captures the texture of the glaze and the depth of the cobalt blue, offering a clear view of the historical craftsmanship involved in its creation. It is a representative example of the decorative arts from the Safavid era, showing the synthesis of traditional Persian motifs with international stylistic currents.
