A seminal Pre-Raphaelite work depicting a scene from Shakespeare's The Tempest, noted for its botanical precision and bright, unconventional colour palette.
Painted in 1849, this work depicts a scene from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Ferdinand, the son of the King of Naples, stands in a forest clearing, listening to the music of Ariel. The spirit Ariel is shown as a translucent, green-clad figure, accompanied by small, bat-winged sprites. Millais painted this work during the early years of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group that sought to return to the detailed observation and bright colour palettes found in art before the time of Raphael.
The composition is notable for its rejection of traditional chiaroscuro. Instead, Millais employs a flat, bright lighting scheme that allows for the meticulous rendering of every leaf, blade of grass, and texture on Ferdinand's costume. The artist spent significant time painting the foliage outdoors, ensuring a level of botanical accuracy that was unconventional for the period. The arched top of the canvas mimics the shape of a medieval window, a common device used by the Brotherhood to frame their narratives.
Ferdinand is dressed in a bright orange tunic and white hose, creating a sharp contrast against the verdant greens of the surrounding vegetation. The ethereal nature of Ariel and the sprites is achieved through thin, layered glazes, which differ from the solid, opaque application used for the human figure. This contrast between the tangible world of the prince and the supernatural realm of the spirits defines the painting's atmosphere. The work reflects the Victorian fascination with Shakespearean themes and the desire to translate poetic imagery into precise, visual form. It remains a primary example of the early Pre-Raphaelite style, characterised by its refusal to soften edges or obscure detail in favour of atmospheric effects.
