Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, produced this work during his exploration of the French coastline. The painting depicts the harbour at Fecamp, a location that provided the artist with ample opportunity to study the effects of light on water and stone. Signac employs the technique of pointillism, applying small, distinct touches of colour that interact optically when viewed from a distance. This method allows the artist to construct the scene through a systematic arrangement of pigment rather than traditional blending.
The composition is divided between the expansive, sun-drenched foreground and the towering cliff face that dominates the right side of the frame. Signac uses a palette of warm ochres, yellows, and creams to capture the intensity of the sunlight reflecting off the ground. In contrast, the sky and the sea are rendered in cooler blues and whites, creating a balance between the heat of the land and the cooling influence of the maritime environment. The small, rectangular brushstrokes are applied with a rhythmic consistency, guiding the eye across the surface of the canvas.
Signac was deeply interested in the scientific theories of colour perception, particularly the work of Michel Eugene Chevreul. By placing complementary colours side by side, he sought to achieve a greater luminosity than was possible with mixed pigments. In this piece, the juxtaposition of warm and cool tones creates a sense of shimmering atmosphere, typical of his mature style. The architectural elements, such as the lighthouse and the small structures near the cliff, are simplified into geometric forms, allowing the focus to remain on the interplay of light and colour. Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
