A Neo-Impressionist depiction of the construction of the Rue Réaumur in Paris, capturing the raw, industrial atmosphere of urban renewal.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, captures the physical transformation of Paris during the late nineteenth century in this work. The painting depicts the construction of the Rue Réaumur, a project that necessitated the demolition of existing structures to accommodate modern urban planning. Luce focuses on the raw, unpolished reality of the building site rather than the finished boulevards often favoured by his contemporaries.
The composition is defined by a sense of flux. To the left, the skeletal remains of buildings stand in stark contrast to the open, dusty ground of the foreground. The palette consists of muted ochres, greys, and earthy tones, reflecting the debris and the industrial nature of the scene. Luce employs short, deliberate brushstrokes that suggest the texture of rubble and the hazy atmosphere of a city in transition. The verticality of the remaining tenements provides a structural anchor, while the foreground remains chaotic and unsettled.

Maximilien Luce
Maximilien Luce was not only a painter but also a committed anarchist, and his political beliefs often influenced his artistic choices. He depicted working-class life and social unrest, offering a perspective rarely seen within the Pointillist movement. While many of his contemporaries focused on landscapes or bourgeois leisure, Luce turned his attention to factories, construction sites, and scenes of labour, imbuing his works with social commentary.
Luce embraced Pointillism, or Neo-Impressionism, following the lead of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. This technique involved applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas, which then blend in the viewer's eye to create a unified image. Unlike Seurat, who sought a scientific precision, Luce used Pointillism to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life, particularly the industrial world. His paintings demonstrate a fascination with light and colour and an interest in capturing the atmosphere of his subjects.
