Misaka Pass in Kai Province - Utagawa Hiroshige

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers on the Misaka Pass with a view of Mount Fuji.

This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige in the final year of his life. The composition employs a classic Ukiyo-e framing technique, using a steep, verdant slope in the foreground to guide the viewer's eye towards the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji. The contrast between the sharp, vertical lines of the pine tree and the gentle, horizontal expanse of the lake creates a sense of spatial depth.

In the lower left, small figures wearing traditional conical hats traverse the path, providing a sense of scale to the vast natural surroundings. The colour palette is defined by the use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became popular in Japanese printmaking during the nineteenth century. The sky transitions from a deep indigo at the top to a pale, atmospheric white near the horizon, a technique known as bokashi, which simulates the subtle shifts in natural light. The green of the hillside is rendered with clear, rhythmic marks, suggesting the texture of grass and earth.

Hiroshige was a master of the genre, and this work demonstrates his ability to capture the atmosphere of a specific location while maintaining a balanced, harmonious arrangement. The red cartouches containing the series title and the print title provide a graphic counterpoint to the natural tones of the scene. This print is a representative example of the late Edo period aesthetic, where the focus shifted towards travel and the observation of famous sites across Japan. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate use of negative space reflect the technical precision required in the woodblock carving process, where each colour was applied using a separate block.
