A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting a falcon perched on a pine tree against a rising sun.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige belongs to the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. The composition features a falcon perched upon the rugged bark of a pine tree, its body angled downwards as if observing prey below. Behind the bird, a large, pale red sun occupies the upper portion of the frame, providing a stark, circular contrast to the vertical orientation of the tree trunk.
Hiroshige employs a limited palette to create a sense of atmospheric clarity. The texture of the pine bark is rendered with distinct, dark markings that break up the reddish-brown surface. The falcon itself is depicted with careful attention to the layering of its feathers, using grey and white tones to suggest volume and movement. The pine needles, rendered in a muted teal, appear at the top and bottom corners, framing the subject and providing a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
In Japanese art, the falcon is a symbol of strength and nobility. By placing the bird against the rising sun, Hiroshige connects the creature to the auspicious imagery of the new day. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance naturalistic observation with the stylistic conventions of the Edo period. The calligraphic lines of the poem in the upper right corner complement the visual elements, maintaining the harmony between text and image typical of high-quality ukiyo-e production. This work reflects the technical precision of the woodblock printing process, where each colour block is aligned to produce a clean, finished image. It remains a representative example of Hiroshige's late career, showing his mastery of composition and his ability to capture a singular, quiet moment in nature.
