A fine example of late Ming Dynasty calligraphy by the scholar-artist Chen Jiru, featuring fluid, semi-cursive script on paper.
This work presents a fine example of the calligraphy of Chen Jiru, a prominent scholar, painter, and writer of the late Ming Dynasty. Chen Jiru is recognised for his rejection of official life in favour of a reclusive existence, a choice that informed his artistic output. His calligraphic style is often described as relaxed and unconstrained, reflecting the ideals of the literati class who valued personal expression over rigid technical perfection.
The text, written in a fluid, semi-cursive script, demonstrates the artist's command of the brush. The characters possess a rhythmic quality, with varying stroke weights that suggest a spontaneous yet controlled execution. The ink density remains consistent, allowing the texture of the paper to remain visible, which adds a tactile quality to the piece. The composition is vertical, typical of traditional Chinese scrolls, and is punctuated by several red seals. These seals provide a visual balance to the dark ink characters, marking the work's provenance and the appreciation of later collectors.
Chen Jiru's calligraphy often avoids the overt display of skill found in professional scribes. Instead, he focuses on a natural, almost casual appearance that aligns with the aesthetic of the amateur scholar. This piece serves as a record of his social and intellectual exchanges, as it is addressed to Liu Jingzhong. The work is not merely a display of linguistic content but an object of aesthetic contemplation, where the physical movement of the brush is as important as the meaning of the words themselves. The preservation of such works allows for an examination of the personal handwriting styles that defined the cultural elite of the period.
