A fine art print of a cursive script calligraphy manuscript by the Ming Dynasty master Wen Peng, documenting a poetic farewell to Lin Jun.
This work displays the cursive script style of Wen Peng, a prominent calligrapher and seal carver of the Ming Dynasty. As the eldest son of the celebrated artist Wen Zhengming, Wen Peng maintained the scholarly traditions of the Wu School, which prioritised personal expression and technical refinement in brushwork. The manuscript serves as a draft for a poem composed to bid farewell to Lin Jun, a contemporary official and scholar.
The composition features fluid, rhythmic characters that demonstrate the artist's command over ink density and pressure. The strokes vary in thickness, moving from bold, saturated marks to lighter, trailing lines that suggest the speed and spontaneity of the writing process. The spacing between columns is irregular, reflecting the informal nature of a draft while maintaining a balance across the paper surface. Several red seal impressions are visible, which denote the provenance and ownership history of the document, a common feature in traditional Chinese scrolls and album leaves.
Wen Peng's calligraphy is noted for its adherence to classical models, particularly the styles of the Jin and Tang dynasties, yet it retains a distinct individual character. The ink remains clear against the aged paper, allowing the viewer to observe the nuances of the brush movement. This piece offers insight into the social and intellectual exchanges among the literati of the sixteenth century, where poetry and calligraphy functioned as primary modes of communication and friendship. The work is a study in the balance between controlled technique and the expressive freedom inherent in cursive script, providing a clear example of the aesthetic values held by the scholar-official class during the Ming period.
