A classic woodblock print from Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, depicting the tidal island of Enoshima and its pilgrims at low tide.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the peak of his career. The composition depicts the tidal island of Enoshima, located in Sagami Province. At low tide, a sandbar emerges, allowing pilgrims and travellers to cross from the mainland to the island, which is home to the Enoshima Shrine. Hokusai captures the movement of these figures as they navigate the wet terrain, their small forms providing a sense of scale against the architecture of the village.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of spatial arrangement and colour. The island is densely packed with traditional structures, rendered with precise lines that define the thatched roofs and stone walls. Beyond the island, the calm waters lead the eye toward the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji, which appears small yet distinct on the horizon. The sky features a subtle gradient, a technique known as bokashi, which transitions from a deep blue at the top to a lighter tone near the horizon line. This effect adds depth to the scene, separating the foreground activity from the distant mountain.

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime.
