This woodblock print by Jukakudō Masakuni captures a scene of leisure during the Edo period. The composition depicts two kabuki actors relaxing on a wooden platform, a common setting for summer evening socialising known as yūsuzumi. The figures wear yukata, the light cotton robes typical of the season, and hold folding fans to combat the humidity. Their expressions and postures suggest a pause in conversation, providing a glimpse into the theatrical culture of the time.
In the background, the artist renders the warehouses of the Nabeshima clan, positioned along a waterway. Small boats drift on the water, adding to the sense of quiet activity. The night sky is filled with a dense pattern of stars, rendered in a stylised manner that contrasts with the more grounded depiction of the figures and architecture. The print employs a limited palette, relying on shades of blue, cream, and black to establish the nocturnal atmosphere.
