A classic Merz collage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring a geometric arrangement of paper ephemera and printed text in a muted, balanced palette.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his own unique approach to collage, which he termed Merz. This work, titled Elikan, demonstrates his method of elevating discarded ephemera into a formal composition. By repurposing printed paper, fragments of text, and coloured scraps, Schwitters constructs a visual field that balances geometric rigour with the chaotic nature of urban debris.
The composition relies on the interplay of rectangular forms and varied paper textures. Schwitters arranges these elements to create a sense of depth, despite the inherent flatness of the medium. The inclusion of the word 'Elikan' repeated on a triangular scrap provides a specific linguistic anchor within an otherwise abstract arrangement. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted ochres, greys, and blacks, punctuated by sharp accents of blue and a single, small red square. This specific use of colour serves to guide the eye across the surface, creating a rhythm that mimics the visual noise of the early twentieth-century city.
Schwitters viewed his Merz works as a way to reassemble a fractured world. By stripping objects of their original function, he allowed them to exist purely as formal components. This piece is a representative example of his ability to find order within fragmentation. The work avoids traditional perspective, instead favouring a layered, architectural approach to the picture plane. It remains a clear example of how Dadaist principles were applied to the medium of collage, transforming everyday waste into a deliberate, constructed aesthetic object.
