Jean Arp created this work during the early years of the Dada movement in Zurich. The composition consists of torn paper squares, arranged on a grey background. Arp utilised the concept of chance to determine the placement of these elements, rejecting traditional notions of artistic control and deliberate composition. By allowing gravity or random selection to dictate the final arrangement, he sought to bypass the conscious mind and rational decision-making processes.

The visual result is a series of irregular, hand-torn shapes in contrasting shades of blue and white. The edges of the paper pieces remain rough, revealing the physical process of their creation.
