A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the coastal station of Ejiri, featuring moored boats and a view toward the Miho Peninsula.
This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the coastal station of Ejiri, looking across the water toward the Miho Peninsula. The composition balances the quiet activity of the harbour with the expansive, calm horizon.
In the foreground, numerous boats are moored along the shoreline, their masts creating a rhythmic verticality against the horizontal expanse of the sea. The middle ground features a dark, wooded spit of land that separates the immediate harbour from the open bay. Beyond this, the distant mountains rise against a sky transitioning from a soft, warm glow at the horizon to a pale, neutral tone above. The use of colour is restrained, relying on shades of blue, ochre, and muted earth tones to convey the atmosphere of a clear day.
Hiroshige is known for his ability to render atmospheric conditions and the specific character of Japanese locations. This print demonstrates his mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in the subtle gradations of the sky and the clarity of the water. The scene provides a view into the travel culture of the Edo period, documenting the stops along the route between the capital and Kyoto. The print remains a primary example of the ukiyo-e tradition, which shifted focus toward natural scenery during the nineteenth century. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate placement of elements reflect the technical precision required in the collaborative process between artist, carver, and printer.
