A refined surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, depicting a woman with poem cards, framed by delicate plum blossoms.
This woodblock print is a fine example of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Totoya Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates his technical skill through the refined application of colour and the inclusion of calligraphic elements. The composition features a woman seated in a contemplative pose, holding a fan near her face. Beside her sits a small box containing poem cards, which suggests the intellectual context of the work. The print pays homage to the earlier master Hishikawa Moronobu, as indicated by the title block.
The visual arrangement is balanced, with the central figure framed by a decorative border featuring plum blossoms. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the deep blue of the woman's kimono to provide a visual anchor against the softer, earthy tones of the background. The kimono pattern, featuring stylised floral motifs, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period. The inclusion of text within the image serves both a decorative and a literary purpose, integrating the poem cards into the overall design.
Surimono prints were produced with higher quality materials than standard commercial prints, often utilising metallic pigments or embossing to achieve specific textures. This work displays the characteristic precision of Hokkei, who was known for his ability to capture subtle expressions and graceful forms. The print functions as a cultural artefact, documenting the intersection of visual art and literature in nineteenth-century Japan. It remains a clear representation of the technical standards maintained by artists within the Ukiyo-e tradition during this era.
