A bold Fauvist still life by Henri Matisse, featuring expressive brushwork and a saturated colour palette.
Painted in 1906, this work captures the experimental spirit of the Fauvist movement. Henri Matisse employs a non-naturalistic approach to colour, prioritising emotional resonance and decorative harmony over the accurate representation of light or shadow. The composition features a collection of domestic objects, including a ceramic bowl, a pitcher, and various fruits, arranged upon a patterned surface.
Matisse uses bold, unmixed pigments to define the forms. The blue of the bowl contrasts sharply with the warm ochre of the pitcher, while the background is divided into blocks of saturated colour. The brushwork is direct and energetic, leaving the texture of the canvas visible in several areas. This technique allows the viewer to observe the process of construction, as the artist builds the image through distinct, rhythmic marks rather than smooth transitions.
The spatial arrangement is flattened, a characteristic shift in early twentieth-century modernism. By tilting the tabletop towards the picture plane, Matisse removes the traditional sense of depth. This creates a decorative effect where the objects exist in a unified, compressed space. The red and black carpet, which provides the title for the work, acts as a grounding element, its colour palette echoing throughout the surrounding forms.
This still life demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between objects and their environment. Rather than focusing on the individual details of the fruit or the ceramic patterns, Matisse treats the entire scene as a single, cohesive arrangement of shapes and hues. The result is a study in balance, where the interaction of complementary colours creates a sense of visual tension. This piece remains a clear example of the stylistic shift that defined the early career of Matisse, moving away from academic realism toward a more subjective interpretation of the visible world.
