A woodblock print from the Yokohama hanjōki, depicting foreign ships arriving at the port of Yokohama during the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print originates from the Yokohama hanjōki, or Diary of Yokohama, a publication documenting the rapid transformation of the port city following the opening of Japan to international trade in the mid-nineteenth century. The work captures the arrival of foreign vessels, a subject that fascinated the Japanese public during the Bakumatsu period. The composition is divided across two panels, presenting a view from a coastal fortification equipped with cannons, looking out toward the sea.
The artist, Kinkei Rōjin, employs a clean, graphic style typical of the Yokohama-e genre. These prints functioned as a form of visual journalism, informing residents of the capital about the strange new technologies and foreign appearances arriving at the treaty port. The ships are rendered with attention to their rigging and masts, contrasting with the simplified, geometric forms of the stone battery in the foreground. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a soft blue for the water and a pale wash for the sky, which allows the technical details of the ships and the defensive weaponry to remain the primary focus.
This print provides a glimpse into the historical tension between traditional Japanese isolationism and the encroaching influence of Western maritime powers. The inclusion of cannons on the shore suggests the defensive posture adopted by the shogunate during this period of uncertainty. As a historical document, the work records the physical presence of foreign influence in the harbour, reflecting the curiosity and anxiety of the era. The print is a representative example of how woodblock artists documented the changing face of Japan, translating complex geopolitical shifts into accessible visual narratives for a broad audience.
