A detailed 1861 woodblock triptych by Utagawa Sadahide depicting the urban layout of Yokohama, including the Hon-chō district and the Miyozaki pleasure quarter.
This triptych by Utagawa Sadahide offers a bird's-eye view of the rapidly developing port city of Yokohama during the Bakumatsu period. As a prominent practitioner of Yokohama-e, Sadahide documented the arrival of foreign influence and the subsequent urban transformation of Japan. The composition employs a high vantage point to map the structured layout of the Hon-chō district and the Miyozaki pleasure quarter, providing a clear visual record of the city's grid and its relationship to the harbour.
The print captures the intersection of traditional Japanese architecture and the influx of international trade. Ships are visible in the bay, while the presence of the American flag on the right panel signals the opening of the port to global commerce. The artist uses a precise, cartographic approach to delineate the streets, canals, and walled compounds that defined the area. Red cartouches are placed throughout the image to identify specific locations, functioning as a guide for contemporary viewers interested in the new urban geography.
In the lower-left section, the Miyozaki pleasure quarter is depicted with flowering cherry trees, providing a contrast to the rigid commercial structures of the port. The colour palette relies on the characteristic Prussian blue for the water and sky, balanced by the muted tones of the wooden buildings and the stark white of the paved areas. This work functions as both a topographical study and a cultural document of a period defined by rapid modernisation. It reflects the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding the changing nature of their coastal cities as they transitioned into a new era of international engagement.
