An eighteenth-century Dutch etching depicting the human life cycle as a staircase, illustrating the progression from infancy to old age.
This etching, titled De trap des ouderdoms, presents a visual allegory of the human life cycle. The composition is structured as a staircase, with figures ascending from infancy on the left to old age on the right. Each step corresponds to a decade of life, marked numerically from ten to one hundred. At the apex, representing the prime of life at age fifty, a couple stands upon a pedestal inscribed with the Latin phrase Memento Mori, a reminder of the inevitability of death.
The print is framed by heavy curtains, suggesting a theatrical presentation of moral philosophy. Central to the composition is a block of Dutch text, which reflects on the fleeting nature of youth and the transient quality of human existence. The figures are rendered in period-appropriate attire, reflecting the fashion of the late eighteenth century in the Netherlands. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of Dutch popular prints from this era, intended for both educational and moral instruction.
Jacobus Wendel, working in Amsterdam, produced this work as a memento of the passage of time. The print serves as a visual meditation on mortality, common in European art of the period. The figures are depicted with a degree of stylisation that prioritises the narrative arc of the life cycle over individual portraiture. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the bottom, Erve H. Rynders, indicates its distribution as a commercial print intended for a broad audience. The work remains a clear example of the didactic nature of eighteenth-century Dutch graphic arts, where visual imagery was frequently paired with verse to convey philosophical concepts to the public.
