A detailed Dutch Mannerist engraving depicting an allegorical globe surrounded by figures, representing the cyclical and changing nature of all things.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo presents a complex allegorical vision of the world, titled Omnium rerum Vicissitudo est, which translates to 'The vicissitude of all things is'. The composition centres on a terrestrial globe, around which various figures are arranged in a circular formation. These figures represent the shifting nature of human existence and the cyclical movement of time. The style is characteristic of Northern Mannerism, featuring elongated forms, dynamic poses, and a high degree of technical precision in the line work.
At the apex, a radiant figure sits atop the globe, suggesting a divine or celestial oversight of earthly affairs. The surrounding figures, some partially draped and others in motion, interact with the globe in ways that imply the constant turning of the world and the inevitable changes that accompany it. The lower portion of the print features an elaborate cartouche containing the Latin title, executed with the decorative flourish common to late sixteenth-century printmaking. The background is rendered with fine cross-hatching, providing a neutral space that allows the figures and the globe to emerge with clarity.
Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active in the late sixteenth century, demonstrates a mastery of the burin here. The work reflects the period's fascination with moralising themes and the use of classical iconography to convey philosophical concepts. The arrangement of the figures creates a sense of perpetual motion, reinforcing the title's message regarding the transient nature of worldly events. This print serves as a fine example of the intellectual and artistic climate of the Netherlands during the late Renaissance, where print culture functioned as a primary medium for the dissemination of complex allegorical and humanistic ideas to a wider audience of scholars and collectors.
