A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, depicting a courtesan in a playful parody of the Daoist immortal Kinko riding a giant carp.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga belongs to the genre of mitate-e, or parody pictures, which were popular during the Edo period. In this work, the artist subverts the traditional iconography of the Daoist immortal Kinko (known in Chinese as Qin Gao), who is typically depicted riding a giant carp across the waves. Shigenaga replaces the sage with a fashionable courtesan, who sits atop the fish while reading a scroll. The juxtaposition of a figure from high religious or mythological tradition with a contemporary urban entertainer was a common method for artists to demonstrate wit and cultural literacy to their audience.
Shigenaga was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, particularly known for his contributions to the benizuri-e (rose-printed) technique, which used a limited palette of colours applied by hand or through multiple blocks. The composition is defined by the vertical orientation of the carp, which creates a sense of movement as it emerges from the stylised, swirling waves. The courtesan is dressed in elaborate robes, with the patterns on her garments rendered with precision. Her posture is relaxed, contrasting with the mythical nature of her mount. The print reflects the playful, satirical nature of the floating world, where the boundaries between the sacred and the profane were frequently blurred for the amusement of the urban populace. The artist's signature is visible on the right side, alongside the stylised waves that frame the central subject. This piece provides a clear example of how Edo-period printmakers engaged with classical themes by reinterpreting them through the lens of contemporary fashion and social life.
