This woodblock print is the forty-fourth station in the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a scene of sudden, forceful wind near the Mie River in Yokkaichi. The composition captures a moment of human struggle against the elements, as a traveller chases his hat, which has been blown into the water. A second figure, sheltered by a large umbrella, crosses a wooden bridge in the distance, their cloak billowing in the gale.

Hiroshige employs a dynamic use of line to convey the movement of the wind. The willow tree in the centre leans sharply, its branches whipped to the left, mirroring the direction of the traveller's pursuit. The reeds along the riverbank are similarly bent, reinforcing the atmospheric conditions of the day. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues for the water and sky, with a band of red at the horizon that suggests the time of day or the intensity of the weather.

The Hoeido Tokaido series, published by Hoeido, brought Hiroshige widespread recognition. Unlike the more static depictions of travel common in earlier prints, these works focus on the sensory experience of the journey. The artist balances the human element with the natural environment, creating a narrative that feels immediate and observational. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige, particularly in the subtle gradations of the sky and the crisp rendering of the wooden bridge structure. This work remains a classic example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the observation of daily life and weather patterns takes precedence over formal portraiture or historical myth.
