A classic Ukiyo-e portrait of a courtesan by Matsuno Chikanobu, featuring the bold lines and decorative textile patterns characteristic of the Kaigetsudo school.
This hanging scroll depicts a courtesan, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Matsuno Chikanobu, active during the early eighteenth century, employs a style characteristic of the Kaigetsudo school. The figure occupies the pictorial space with a sense of volume, her posture defined by the heavy, sweeping lines of her kimono. The artist focuses on the textile patterns, which include floral motifs and geometric shapes, rendered with precision against the neutral background of the silk.
The composition follows the conventions of the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. The courtesan is shown in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed away from the viewer. Her attire is layered, with the outer garment draped to reveal the complex patterns of the under-layers. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted reds, blues, and earthy tones that have softened over time. The line work is firm and deliberate, outlining the form of the figure and the folds of the fabric to create a sense of weight and presence.
As a representative of the Kaigetsudo lineage, the work prioritises the physical stature of the subject. The artist avoids excessive detail in the facial features, opting for a stylised representation that aligns with the aesthetic ideals of the era. This print captures the fashion and social status of the courtesan, who served as a model for contemporary style in the pleasure districts of Edo. The work provides a view into the artistic priorities of the early eighteenth century, where the focus remained on the silhouette and the decorative quality of the subject's clothing.
