Standing Courtesan - Baiōken Eishun

This hanging scroll depicts a standing courtesan, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Baiōken Eishun, an artist active in the early eighteenth century, captures the figure with a focus on the elegant curvature of the body and the elaborate layering of the kimono. The subject is shown in a gentle, turning posture, a pose that allows the artist to display the textile patterns and the contrasting colours of the undergarments.

The figure wears a pale blue kimono decorated with subtle floral motifs, cinched with a bold orange obi. Beneath the outer layer, glimpses of red and white fabric provide a visual balance to the composition. The artist employs a refined line quality, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the delicate strands of hair. The background remains largely unadorned, save for a vertical column of calligraphy positioned above the figure, which integrates the text into the overall design of the scroll.

Eishun was associated with the Kaigetsudō school, a group known for their depictions of beautiful women, or bijin-ga. These works often feature figures with a strong, sculptural presence, defined by bold outlines and a sense of volume. While this piece shares the school's interest in the female form, it exhibits a slightly more restrained approach to colour and pattern than some of the more dramatic woodblock prints of the era.
