A classical mythological scene by Dutch painter Jacob de Wit, featuring Ceres, Venus, Bacchus, and a sleeping Cupid in a warm, theatrical composition.
Jacob de Wit, a prominent Dutch painter of the eighteenth century, produced this mythological scene with the technical precision characteristic of his training. The composition features four figures from classical antiquity: Ceres, Venus, Bacchus, and a sleeping Cupid. De Wit was well known for his ability to mimic the appearance of marble relief sculpture in his grisaille work, yet here he employs a full palette to explore the interplay of light and shadow across human skin and heavy drapery.
The figures are arranged in a tight, theatrical grouping. Venus occupies the centre, her form illuminated against the deep, saturated red of the fabric behind her. To her left, Bacchus is depicted with his traditional attributes, while Ceres is positioned slightly behind, observing the scene. The sleeping Cupid rests in the foreground, his wings partially visible, providing a quiet counterpoint to the more active postures of the deities. The artist uses a warm, golden light to model the musculature and soft contours of the figures, creating a sense of volume that draws the viewer into the narrative space.
De Wit often worked on commissions for the interiors of grand houses in Amsterdam, where such mythological subjects were popular for ceiling paintings and overmantel decorations. This work reflects the taste for classical themes that defined the period, focusing on the grace and physical beauty of the subjects. The handling of the paint is smooth, with minimal visible brushwork, allowing the focus to remain on the anatomical accuracy and the balanced arrangement of the figures. The contrast between the cool, pale flesh tones and the warm, dark background creates a clear separation of planes, typical of the decorative painting style of the Dutch Rococo era.
