Beskrivning
A festive scene by Henri Rousseau, depicting a circular dance beneath trees to mark the centenary of the French Revolution.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter often associated with the Naïve movement, produced this work to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution. The composition features a group of figures dancing in a circle beneath a large, central tree, a recurring motif in his oeuvre. The scene is decorated with numerous flags and streamers, creating a festive atmosphere that occupies the upper portion of the canvas.
Rousseau employs a distinct approach to perspective and scale, characteristic of his non-academic training. The figures are arranged in a flattened, frieze-like manner, with little attempt to create a sense of deep space. The trees are rendered with a meticulous, almost schematic attention to individual leaves, while the figures exhibit a simplified, doll-like quality. The colour palette is dominated by earthy greens, warm reds, and the stark white of the flags, which provide a rhythmic contrast across the surface of the painting.
To the right, a group of figures in historical costume observes the dancers, grounding the scene in a specific historical context while maintaining the dreamlike quality typical of Rousseau's work. The lack of traditional shading and the emphasis on clear, defined outlines contribute to the work's clarity. This painting reflects the artist's unique vision, where reality and imagination merge to create a personal interpretation of national celebration. The repetition of the flags and the circular motion of the dancers create a sense of unity and balance, typical of his structured approach to composition. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to transform historical subjects into personal, stylised narratives.

Centennial of Independence - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
