Beskrivning
A dreamlike 1886 oil painting by Henri Rousseau, featuring two costumed figures in a dark, moonlit forest.
Carnival Evening, painted in 1886, is one of the earliest major works by the self-taught French artist Henri Rousseau. The composition depicts two figures dressed in carnival costumes, a pierrot and a woman, standing in a dark, wooded area under a full moon. The trees are rendered with a meticulous, almost skeletal precision, their bare branches creating a dense screen against the night sky.
Rousseau, a former customs officer, developed a unique visual language that bypassed traditional academic training. His approach is characterised by a flat, decorative treatment of space and a dreamlike, atmospheric quality. The contrast between the small, brightly lit figures and the vast, shadowy forest creates a sense of isolation and mystery. The sky, painted in deep, moody tones of blue and grey, is illuminated by a luminous moon, which provides the primary light source for the scene.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the theatrical and the uncanny. The figures appear detached from their surroundings, as if they are actors on a stage rather than individuals in a natural setting. The meticulous detail applied to the foliage and the costumes demonstrates Rousseau's dedication to his craft, despite his lack of formal instruction. The painting was first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1886, where it received a mixed reception, yet it remains a primary example of his ability to transform mundane subjects into enigmatic, poetic visions. The composition avoids conventional perspective, favouring a layered arrangement that emphasises the graphic quality of the trees and the stillness of the night.

Carnival Evening - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
