A classic Kacho-ga study by Kano Motonobu, depicting birds and spring blossoms with refined ink-wash techniques and balanced composition.
This work by Kano Motonobu represents the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. As a central figure of the Kano school, Motonobu synthesised the brush techniques of Chinese ink painting with the decorative sensibilities of the Japanese Yamato-e style. This particular composition captures the essence of spring through the careful arrangement of a blossoming tree, bamboo, and various avian subjects.
The artist employs a controlled use of ink wash to define the gnarled trunk of the tree, contrasting this with the delicate, precise lines used for the petals and foliage. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the tree and rock formation on the right side providing a stable anchor for the more open, atmospheric space on the left. The birds are rendered with observational accuracy, their postures suggesting natural movement within the branches. The muted palette, punctuated by subtle touches of colour, maintains the aesthetic restraint characteristic of the period.
Motonobu was instrumental in establishing the Kano school as a dominant force in Japanese art. His approach to painting often involved a clear structure, which allowed for the production of large-scale screen paintings for samurai residences and temples. This piece reflects the technical rigour and stylistic clarity that defined his output. The paper surface, aged to a warm tone, provides a neutral ground that allows the ink work to remain the primary focus. By integrating the subjects into a unified environment, the artist creates a sense of seasonal transition and natural harmony. This print offers a clear view of the brushwork and the subtle tonal variations that are essential to the appreciation of Muromachi-period ink painting.
