A delicate hanging scroll painting by Kiyohara Yukinobu, featuring quails and millet rendered in ink and colour on silk.
Kiyohara Yukinobu was a prominent female painter of the seventeenth-century Kano school. Her work often features the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. This hanging scroll depicts a pair of quails resting near stalks of millet. The composition relies on the traditional Japanese aesthetic of negative space, allowing the viewer to focus on the delicate brushwork of the birds and the swaying millet heads.
The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft earth tones and muted greens to suggest an autumnal atmosphere. The quail on the right stands alert, while its companion rests on the ground, creating a sense of quiet observation. The millet stalks are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that convey movement, contrasting with the stillness of the birds. Yukinobu demonstrates a mastery of ink wash techniques, balancing the density of the subjects against the expansive, empty silk background.
As a member of the Kano school, Yukinobu followed the rigorous training typical of the period, yet she developed a distinct style that favoured elegance and precision. Her contributions to the school are notable, particularly given the social constraints placed upon women artists in Edo-period Japan. This piece reflects the technical proficiency required of a professional painter, showing careful attention to the textures of feathers and the organic forms of the grain. The work remains a fine example of the period's interest in the natural world, captured through a lens of refined simplicity and technical discipline. The scroll format itself dictates the vertical orientation, guiding the eye from the grounded birds upwards to the arching millet, creating a harmonious visual rhythm.
