This woodblock print, titled Banana Garden at Nakashima, belongs to the series Eight Views of the Ryukyu Islands. Katsushika Hokusai, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, depicts a coastal settlement with a distinct architectural character. The composition features a cluster of houses with blue-tiled roofs, nestled among lush banana trees and stone walls. A small boat drifts on the calm water in the foreground, while rolling hills rise in the distance under a soft, gradient sky.
Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style to define the forms of the buildings and the foliage. The use of colour is restrained, relying on shades of blue, pale yellow, and muted earth tones to create a sense of atmospheric depth.
