A satirical lithograph by Henri Bonaventure Monnier depicting the fashionable Parisian elite during the late 1820s.
Henri Bonaventure Monnier was a keen observer of the social strata in nineteenth-century Paris. This lithograph, titled Aristocratie Financière, belongs to his series Vues de Paris. It captures a crowd of figures dressed in the height of contemporary fashion, their forms rendered with the quick, expressive lines characteristic of his satirical work. Monnier often focused on the manners and affectations of the bourgeoisie, using his draughtsmanship to document the shifting social hierarchies of the July Monarchy period.
The composition presents a horizontal arrangement of figures, each wearing the top hats and voluminous skirts typical of the late 1820s. Monnier employs a light, sketch-like quality in his line work, which allows the individual character of each figure to emerge through posture and costume rather than heavy shading. The figures are grouped closely, suggesting the dense social atmosphere of a public promenade or a fashionable gathering. By titling the work Aristocratie Financière, Monnier comments on the rise of the moneyed class, who sought to emulate the traditional aristocracy through their dress and public display.
As a lithograph, this piece reflects the technical developments in printmaking during the early nineteenth century, which allowed artists to reproduce their drawings with greater fidelity to the original hand. The work remains a primary document of the period, offering a glimpse into the visual culture of Paris. Monnier's ability to capture the essence of his subjects with minimal detail makes this a compelling example of French social caricature. The print is presented here with the original plate marks and inscriptions, preserving its historical context as a piece of graphic reportage from the era.
