A satirical lithograph by Edouard de Beaumont depicting a man attempting to avoid his wife on a Parisian street, c. 1840.
This lithograph by Edouard de Beaumont, titled 'Pourvu que je ne rencontre pas ma femme!' (If only I do not meet my wife!), captures a moment of social anxiety common in nineteenth-century French satirical prints. Beaumont, a prolific illustrator and painter, was well-known for his contributions to periodicals such as Le Charivari, where he documented the manners and foibles of Parisian society.
The scene depicts a stout gentleman in a top hat and heavy coat, standing in the shadows of a building. His posture is hesitant, his hand raised to his chin in a gesture of contemplation or worry. He watches two women walking past, their backs turned to him. The women are dressed in the fashionable attire of the 1840s, complete with bonnets and full skirts. The title, printed below the image, provides the narrative context: the man is clearly attempting to avoid an encounter with his spouse, perhaps while engaged in some illicit or embarrassing activity in the Quartier de la Boule Rouge.
Technically, the work displays the characteristic style of mid-century French lithography. The lines are delicate and calligraphic, providing form to the figures while maintaining a sense of spontaneity. The hand-applied colour is restrained, focusing on the garments to differentiate the figures from the neutral, sketched background. The composition is relatively flat, typical of the era's illustrative style, which prioritised the legibility of the narrative over spatial depth.
This print belongs to a broader tradition of French social satire that flourished during the July Monarchy. Artists like Beaumont used these small-scale works to comment on the domestic tensions and public behaviours of the bourgeoisie. The print serves as a window into the social codes of the period, where the streets of Paris functioned as a stage for private dramas and public appearances.
