Beskrivning
A study of three apples by French Realist Gustave Courbet, painted in 1871. This work features a dark, moody background and a tactile, heavy application of paint.
Gustave Courbet, a central figure in the nineteenth-century French Realist movement, produced this study of apples during his final years. Painted in 1871, the work reflects his direct approach to subject matter, prioritising the physical presence of objects over idealised or academic arrangements. Courbet often turned to still life subjects during periods of personal or political upheaval, finding a quiet focus in the humble fruit.
The composition is stark and unadorned. Three apples rest upon a textured, light-coloured surface, set against a deep, dark background that obscures any sense of a defined room or setting. The artist employs a heavy application of paint, using the brush to build up the volume and weight of the fruit. The red tones of the apples are applied with a tactile quality, capturing the way light catches the skin of the fruit while leaving the surrounding space in shadow. This focus on the material reality of the objects is characteristic of Courbet's broader rejection of the polished, smooth surfaces favoured by the contemporary Salon.
Unlike the elaborate still lifes of the Dutch masters, which often included symbolic elements or moralising themes, this work remains grounded in the immediate observation of the physical world. The paint handling is robust, showing the artist's confidence in his medium. The signature and date, visible in the lower right, confirm the work was completed during his time in Sainte-Pélagie prison, where he was held following the Paris Commune. Despite the confined circumstances of its creation, the painting maintains a sense of solidity and presence, demonstrating the artist's ability to find artistic merit in the most straightforward of subjects.

Apples - Gustave Courbet
Artist Biography
Gustave Courbet
Courbet's most famous works, such as 'The Stone Breakers' (destroyed during WWII) and 'Burial at Ornans', were not merely paintings; they were manifestos. He elevated the everyday to the monumental, forcing viewers to confront the lives of ordinary people with the same seriousness previously reserved for gods and heroes. His nudes, like 'The Bathers', scandalised Parisian society, not for their nudity, but for their unapologetic lack of idealisation. They were real women, with real bodies, a stark contrast to the airbrushed fantasies of academic art.
Though controversial in his time, Courbet's influence is undeniable. He paved the way for future generations of artists to break free from tradition and embrace the world around them. Owning a Courbet print is more than just acquiring a beautiful image; it's a declaration of independence, a celebration of the real, and a nod to the artist who dared to paint the world as it truly was.
