This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts a central episode from Japanese mythology: the emergence of the sun goddess Amaterasu from the Heavenly Rock Cave. Following a period of withdrawal that plunged the world into darkness, the other deities gathered to lure her out. Yoshitoshi captures the moment of transition, using the stark contrast between the deep, ink-black void of the cave and the warm, golden light emanating from within to define the scene.
The composition is structured around the threshold of the cave. To the left, a deity is shown in dynamic motion, gesturing towards the light, while Amaterasu stands to the right, her long, dark hair flowing down her back as she steps into the world. The print is part of the series 'Mirror of Famous Generals of Great Japan', a collection that often blended historical figures with legendary narratives. Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, employs precise line work to delineate the folds of the robes and the expressive features of the figures.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay of black, cream, and muted red to focus the viewer on the narrative action. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper right corner provides context for the mythological event, a common feature in ukiyo-e prints of this era.
