A 1521 woodcut by Albrecht Dürer featuring the Imperial coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire alongside the heraldry of Nuremberg.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, dated 1521, presents a complex heraldic composition. The central focus is the Imperial coat of arms, featuring the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, surmounted by the Imperial crown. Flanking this central emblem are two smaller shields representing the city of Nuremberg, each held by an angel. The upper portion of the print depicts two female figures seated amidst clouds. One figure holds a sword and scales, representing Justice, while the other holds a cornucopia, symbolising abundance or prosperity. A tablet between them bears the inscription SANCTA IVSTICIA and the date 1521.
Dürer demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut medium through the precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques used to define the forms. The contrast between the heavy, solid lines of the shields and the lighter, more fluid lines of the clouds and drapery creates a sense of depth. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, reflecting the formal requirements of heraldic display while incorporating the humanistic allegorical figures common in Renaissance art. The work functions as a visual statement of the political and civic identity of Nuremberg within the broader context of the Holy Roman Empire.
This print is a fine example of Dürer's ability to combine technical rigour with symbolic narrative. The figures are rendered with anatomical accuracy, and the heraldic elements are executed with clarity. The work provides insight into the visual culture of the early sixteenth century, where civic pride and imperial authority were frequently expressed through such formalised imagery. The print remains a significant record of the artistic output of Dürer during his later years, showing his continued engagement with both religious and secular themes.
