A fine Mughal miniature painting from the Akbar Nama, depicting Emperor Akbar mounting his horse amidst a natural setting.
This exquisite miniature painting originates from the Akbar Nama, the official chronicle of the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Attributed to the artist Sur Das Gujarati, the work demonstrates the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and indigenous Indian styles that defined the Mughal court atelier during the late 16th century. The scene depicts the Emperor Akbar in the act of mounting his horse, surrounded by a natural setting populated with various animals, including deer and cattle.
The composition is organised with a clear sense of spatial hierarchy. The Emperor occupies the centre, his posture captured with precision, while the surrounding figures and fauna are rendered with careful attention to detail. The background features rocky outcrops and a distant architectural structure, typical of the period's approach to spatial depth. The artist employs a muted palette, punctuated by the gold and fine pigments characteristic of high-quality manuscript illumination.
Sur Das Gujarati was a known contributor to the imperial workshops. His work here reflects the technical mastery required for such royal commissions.
