After Dinner at Ornans is a seminal work by Gustave Courbet, completed in 1849. It depicts a quiet, domestic scene in the artist's hometown. Four men are gathered around a table following a meal. One man plays a violin, another listens, while the remaining two appear lost in thought or conversation. A dog rests beneath a chair, adding to the sense of stillness.
Courbet painted this work on a large scale, a format traditionally reserved for historical or religious subjects. By applying this grandeur to a mundane, everyday occurrence, he challenged the artistic conventions of his time. The composition is grounded in the reality of provincial life, avoiding the idealised subjects favoured by the French Academy.
