An early sixteenth-century engraving depicting an eagle perched upon a collection of military arms and armour, executed with precise cross-hatching.
This engraving by the anonymous artist known as the Meester van 1515 (Master of 1515) depicts a collection of military equipment arranged as a trophy. An eagle, rendered with sharp, precise lines, perches atop a helmet. Below this, the composition includes a shield, a quiver of arrows, a bow, and various blades. The artist uses dense cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, giving the metallic surfaces a distinct sheen.
The trophy of arms, or 'trophée d'armes', was a popular motif in the early sixteenth century. It draws inspiration from classical antiquity, where victors would display the captured armour of their defeated enemies. The Meester van 1515, active in the early sixteenth century, is known for a small body of engravings that demonstrate a high level of technical skill in the medium. This work reflects the period's fascination with the aesthetics of warfare and the symbolic power of heraldic imagery.
The arrangement is vertical and compact, filling the frame with overlapping objects. The artist balances the organic form of the eagle with the rigid, geometric shapes of the weaponry. The background consists of fine, horizontal lines that suggest a dark, atmospheric space, pushing the metallic objects forward. This print is a fine example of the technical precision found in early Italian Renaissance printmaking, where the engraver's burin was used to define texture and form with extreme clarity. The work remains a study in composition and the representation of material culture from the early modern period.
