A detailed sixteenth-century engraving depicting a collection of armour and weaponry, rendered with precise hatching and classical composition.
This engraving by the anonymous artist known as the Master of 1515 displays a collection of military equipment arranged as a decorative trophy. The composition features a breastplate, a helmet, a halberd, and a sword, all bundled together in a manner common to the period for architectural or decorative ornamentation. The artist employs a dense system of diagonal hatching to create a dark, textured background, which pushes the metallic forms of the armour forward.
The Master of 1515 is identified by a small monogram, often appearing as a tablet with the date 1515. This artist worked within the orbit of the Italian Renaissance, yet their style shows a clear engagement with the technical precision of Northern European printmaking. The lines are sharp and deliberate, defining the cold, reflective surfaces of the steel and the rigid geometry of the weapons.
Such prints were produced for a market interested in classical motifs and the display of martial prowess. The arrangement is not intended to depict a scene of battle, but rather to present the objects as static, symbolic items. The focus remains on the technical execution of the metalwork, with the artist carefully rendering the curves of the helmet and the sharp edges of the halberd. This work provides a clear example of the sixteenth-century fascination with the aesthetic potential of military hardware, stripped of its functional context and presented as a formal exercise in line and shadow.
